.Valerie Aponik lives and works from her studio/home on Great Wass Island.  Primarily a plein air painter,  Aponik is often found along the local waterfront, islands, homes and gardens of Coastal Maine in all Four Seasons.  Known for her use of color and passionate brush work to convey light and form she could be described as an impressionist.  

“Painting on location, gives me the most alive feeling of the now.  I seek to record that moment, in my own language, through paint, color, form and the play of light and dark.  Sharing the work is a chance to connect,   in a unique way, with the viewer.”

Primarily a self - taught artist,  Aponik allows that “painting every day has been my best education”.    She has studied with Colin Page,  Stuart Shils,  T. Allen Lawson,  Louise  Bourne   and Lois Griffel.   Formally educated with a BS in Health Education and Nursing, she practiced for 27 years as an Emergency Nurse before pursing painting full time 6 years ago.
Her work is shown at the Woodwind Gallery in Machias,  Nelson Decoy Gallery in Jonesport,  Grey Wolf Gallery in Addison,   Blue Hill  Bay Gallery in Blue Hill, Archipelago in Rockland,  and  By Design Gallery in  Bangor.  

Aponik’s  work  received  First place for painting in 2008, 09 and Second  2010 at the Art By the Sea Show in Bar Harbor.  She was honored with Best Of Show and People’s Choice  Award at  the Maine Coast Competition in 2006
